If he had wanted to create a more transparent project he could have. But the way the public reacts to incidents holds some blame in making such transparency frightening. Even Waymo, which tries to be more transparent than Cruise, has trouble doing it. In a field where there are only two major players, it may not be much to say that “Cruise was the worst at it” but it is nonetheless true. I regularly advised their PR department that in my judgment they were taking the wrong approach.

The announcement at CES certainly seemed to confirm that version of events. The accident, and the consequent licence revocation, was a significant setback for Cruise and for the autonomous driving industry.
